New changes came out on January 1, 2025. Along with changes in fees for titles, security interest additions and 1st time registration fees, you can now do many motor vehicle transactions in ANY County Treasurer's Office. What this means is that for customer convenience you can now apply for a duplicate title, add a security interest, regular title and 1st time registration fees, dealer titles, junking certificates, salvage titles, and non-transferable registrations at ANY County Treasurer's Office and not just in the county that you reside in.
Iowa registrations are good for 1 year. A courtesy notice will be mailed out to Cherokee county residents 1 month prior to registration month and will be mailed to the most current address our office has on file. Please use this notice when mailing in your payment. You will need this notice when making payment online, as you will be required a PIN to complete payment. This PIN can be found in the upper right hand corner of this blue notice. The blue notice allows you to pay 30 days before your registration month, the 30 days of your registration month and 30 days after your registration month before penalty and late fees begin.

In the state of Iowa, license plates belong to the owner NOT to the vehicle. You will need to remove the plates from the vehicle/trailer when you sell it. The purchaser will have the Bill of Sale, and title or registration paper to provide as their proof of purchase. The purchaser will have 30 days to transfer the purchased vehicle/trailer to their name and will be issued plates in their name. Remember to turn in your plates to a County Treasurer's office so the vehicle/trailer can be removed from your name. You may also have excess registration money refunded to you!
If you recently moved to Iowa, please visit our page on our county website for requirements and list of items you may need to register your vehicle.
